PECAN GROVE Katsu got his first mandolin when he was a high school student.He touched bluegrass music in university's American Music Club for the first time and started to play as a professional musician in 1985.He won the 1st place in the Takarazuka Bluegrass Festival's mandolin championship in 1986 and he was Moon Shiner Magazinefs Mandolin Player of the year in 1988. Katsu competed 4 times in the Winfield National Championship in Kansas. He got to the final every time and placed in 3rd in 1991. In 1996, Katsu had a great experience recording his first solo CD with Ronnie McCoury, Rickie Simpkins, Richard Bailey, Gene Libbea, David Grier, Rob Ikes,Alan O'Bryant and Kenny Malone. Called Man-O-Mandolin, itwas released in October 1996 by Red Clay Records (RC-114).This latest effort, called Mandoscape, is his 2nd solo album and is also on Red Clay Records. David Grier produced it and he helped Katsu to arrange every song and played the guitar.Theywere joined also by Scott Vestal on Banjo, Aubrey Haynie on fiddle, and Viktor Krauss on bass. |
